Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology 2025 - electric G-Wagen review

Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology 2025 WhichCar?

At the core of Mercedes-Benz's electric strategy, the 2025 G 580 with EQ Technology emerges as a fully electric G-Class, combining heritage design with modern electric propulsion.

Table of contents:

Powertrain And Performance

The G 580 uses four permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors - one per wheel - delivering a combined output of 432 kW (579 hp) and torque of 1,164 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in about 4.7 seconds, with a top speed limited to 180 km/h. The vehicle keeps its traditional body-on-frame ladder chassis, ensuring the ruggedness and durability that have defined the G-Class for decades.

Battery, Range And Charging Capabilities

The battery offers 116 kWh of usable capacity (around 124 kWh total). Driving range depends on testing standards and markets:

  • In Europe, the WLTP-rated range is about 473 km (294 miles).
  • In the USA, the EPA-rated range is around 239 miles (385 km).
  • In Australia, some figures show up to 567 km, though measured under the older NEDC cycle.

DC fast charging supports up to 200 kW, enabling a 10-80% recharge in about 32-35 minutes. With an 11 kW three-phase home charger, a full charge takes roughly 12.5 hours. Using a 7.4 kW single-phase setup requires about 18.5 hours, while a standard household outlet may take close to 59 hours.

Equipment, Design Features And Practical Elements

The G 580 introduces several advanced features that highlight its capability and uniqueness. G-Turn allows the SUV to rotate on the spot for tight situations. Simulated differential locks, three-speed crawl modes, a transparent hood view, and G-Steering enhance off-road precision and control.

  • Inside, the SUV is fitted with dual 12.3-inch displays powered by MBUX, Burmester 3D audio, wireless charging, memory seating, ambient lighting, and temperature-controlled cupholders.
  • A G-Roar synthetic sound system produces an engine-like tone both inside and outside the cabin.
  • The body-on-frame architecture is retained, with the battery pack integrated into the structure for stability and safety.

Pricing Across Markets

  • UK and Europe: Early Edition One versions were priced at around £180,860 on the road, while the AMG Line Premium Plus currently starts from approximately £154,870 RRP.
  • USA: MSRP begins at about $161,500, with well-equipped models reaching around $183,250.
  • Australia and other regions: Australian prices start at AUD $249,900 before on-road costs, with Edition One versions listed near AUD $299,000.

These figures show significant regional differences due to equipment, taxation, and specification requirements.

Market Reception And Sales Performance

Sales have been lower than the internal combustion G-Class, with about 1,450 G 580 units sold compared to over 9,000 ICE versions in a similar timeframe. High entry costs, heavy curb weight of roughly 3,085 kg, limited range in real-world conditions, and the lack of towing options contribute to this outcome.

Market response also varies. In the UK and Europe, WLTP range figures and low-emission zone compatibility suit urban buyers. In the USA, shorter EPA-rated range and highway driving patterns present challenges. In Australia and similar markets, off-road focus and long-distance travel highlight issues with infrastructure and practicality.

Despite these challenges, the G 580 maintains the G-Class identity while adding unique electric capabilities aimed at loyal customers and early adopters worldwide.
